Photos and Info from Various Trips.

Trip to Fort Casey on January, 21, 2008

Teri and I took a trip to Fort Casey. We took the ferry from Mukilteo to Clinton. It was pretty relaxing.

The ferry trip is pretty short. We spent some time out on the deck watching the seagulls, the waves, and other boats before it we decided it was too cold. The mountains looked great - the sky was very clear. A great day for a road trip!

The trip from the Clinton ferry terminal to Fort Casey was pretty uneventful. It was easy enough that I managed to get there without any backtracking!

One of the first things we saw while at Fort Casey was the lighthouse. Here is some information about the lighthouse stolen from http://www.admiraltyhead.wsu.edu/.

'Built in 1861 and rebuilt in 1903, the lighthouse guided tall ships toward the Whidbey Island shore where they could fill their sails with wind. It was the last brick lighthouse designed by renowned German architect Carl Leick - its walls 18 inches thick to withstand the earthquakes that shake western Washington. Admiralty Head's Fresnel lens was extinguished in 1922.'

There were quite a bit of people at Fort Casey, but the place was pretty large so it wasn't overly crowded in any one spot. Teri and I walked around the 'disappearing' guns, and walked through the various rooms. The two guns at Fort Casey were salvaged from active duty from Subic Bay in the Phillipines after World War II. The pitting (visible in the picture) is apparently the result of the effects of Japanese bombing during World War II.

It was really neat being able to look out from various places (Teri can be seen looking out from one of the concrete boxes that are raised off of the ground) and imagine what people might have been there in the past - whether they be tourists or people stationed at the fort. Teri and I saw seven deer walking around the grounds while we were there. The deer must be very used to the tourists, because they weren't wary of people or the cars at all.
